Double Asymptotic Scaling ’96

We review recent HERA data on the structure function F2 at small x and large Q . We show that the salient features of the data are revealed by comparing them to the double asymptotic scaling behaviour which F2 is predicted to satisfy in perturbative QCD. Invited talk given at

Scaling and Asymptotic Scaling in the SU ( 2 ) Gauge Theory

We determine the critical couplings for the deconfinement phase transition in SU (2) gauge theory on N τ × N 3 σ lattices with N τ = 8 and 16 and N σ varying between 16 and 48. A comparison with string tension data shows scaling of the ratio T c / √ σ in the entire coupling regime β = 2.30 − 2.75, while the individual quantities still exhibit large scaling violations. We find T c / √ σ =0.69(2)...

Asymptotic Series and Precocious Scaling

Some of the basic concepts regarding asymptotic series are reviewed. A heuristic proof is given that the divergent QCD perturbation series is asymptotic. By treating it as an asymptotic expansion we show that it makes sense to keep only the first few terms. The example of e+e− annihilation is considered. It is shown that by keeping only the first few terms one can get within a per cent (or smal...

Asymptotic Normality of Scaling Functions

The Gaussian function G(x) = 1 p 21⁄4 e¡x 2=2; which has been a classical choice for multiscale representation, is the solution of the scaling equation G(x) = Z R ®G(®x¡ y)dg(y); x 2 R; with scale ® > 1 and absolutely continuous measure dg(y) = 1 p 21⁄4(®2 ¡ 1) e¡y 2=2(®2¡1)dy: It is known that the sequence of normalized B-splines (Bn); where Bn is the solution of the scaling equation Á(x) = n ...

Asymptotic scaling from strong coupling.

Strong-coupling analysis of two-dimensional chiral models, extended to 15th order, allows for the identification of a scaling region where known continuum results are reproduced with great accuracy, and asymptotic scaling predictions are fulfilled. The properties of the large-N second-order phase transition are quantitatively investigated. Typeset using REVTEX
